A YEAR-ROUND HOME FOR COMMUNITY ATHLETICS
The main goal of this project was to expand recreational opportunities in North Buffalo. To ensure that Shoshone Park had the ability to support a large‑scale indoor athletics facility, a comprehensive feasibility study was initiated. Early planning focused on long‑term growth, improved circulation, and integration with the existing park infrastructure, requiring close coordination with multiple municipal entities.
Young + Wright Architectural led full architectural services from schematic design through construction documentation, shaping a 120' x 220' clear‑span indoor fieldhouse capable of accommodating everything from baseball to soccer. The finished product also came with batting cages, team meeting rooms, offices, storage, merchandise sales, restrooms, and parent viewing areas. All areas were supported by durable finishes to withstand the high-impact activity that would take place in the facility, and natural lighting to reinforce the authentic sports atmosphere. Additional scope included renovations to an adjacent facilities building, new and reconfigured parking, and infrastructure connections to nearby NFTA parking lots.
Anchoring the building both visually and symbolically, the exterior features a large-scale mural of Future Champions, designed by internationally recognized artist Eduardo Kobra, celebrating youth, sportsmanship, and community pride. The completed project delivers a multi‑functional, year‑round destination that strengthens park infrastructure, supports local athletic programs, and positions Shoshone Park for future growth.
