A TWO-PHASE TRANSFORMATION
Serving more than 1,200 students, the Erie 1 BOCES Harkness Career & Technical Center has been a hub for hands-on education since 1957, with expansions in the 1960s and 1970s. This facility plays a crucial role in accommodating students within the E1B system. Phase 1 focused on making the building warm, safe, and dry through major HVAC upgrades, new rooftop units, a fully renovated boiler room, and improved thermal efficiency via roof renovations. A secure entry was introduced to enhance safety, while a redesigned bus loop improved drainage, traffic flow, and guided visitors to the main entrance. Additional updates included new flooring, ceilings, doors, and electrical service improvements.
Phase 2 at the Erie 1 BOCES Kenton Career & Technical Center supported the District’s mission with infrastructure upgrades and modernized learning spaces. HVAC systems were upgraded with new controls, a roof replacement was completed, and critical masonry repairs were addressed. The highlight was the conversion of an existing auto shop into three state-of-the-art facilities: an Electrical Lab, Animal Science Lab, and Sports Science Lab, each designed for both instruction and hands-on experience, with specialized features like examination tables, wash bays, electrical workstations, and fitness equipment. Lastly, a reimagined secure entry and renovated main office now provide a visitor access point.
Together, these multi-phase improvements modernized infrastructure, improved safety, and created future-ready learning environments, ensuring Erie 1 BOCES facilities can continue to support diverse educational programs for decades to come.
